Quo vadis, PSC Mindanao

Death came to the Mindanao Sattelite Office of the Philippine Sports Commission. My friend Moses Billacura broke the news last week that the new Chair of the PSC Harry Angping just closed shop the office along Quimpo Boulevard in Davao City.

What is the effect of the office's closure to sports in Mindanao?

Sounds a good topic over hot cappucino at Bo's don't you think, Mo?

Through my lens, curiously

There was a time when a sports photographer would splash his photographs under the column "Through My Lens, Clearly" in a weekly sports magazine which I subscribed to since I was a kid. These were the first images that left a lasting imprint on my appreciation for sports journalism. Now, I am trying some attempts at putting my eye behind the lens in a manner professionals view sports. Last weekend, I packed the trusty cam with me to the Davraa swimming and athletics competitions in Mati and clicked away, clearly.

A mermaid named Dara

Davao girl is DAVRAA’s best mermaid

Nine-year old Dara Clariza Evangelista of Davao City emerged as the region’s best mermaid after she splashed to a four-gold two-silver haul in the recent Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) swimming competitions in Mati, Davao Oriental over the weekend.

The fourth-grader Davao Wisdom Academy standout, backed up by Growee Vitamins, romped over the competition in style, winning the individual gold medal in 50-m butterfly and 50-meter freestyle, and anchoring the DCAA Team to the gold in 4x50m medley relay and 4x50 freestyle relay.

She laced her quadruple gold harvest with a pair of silvers in the 50-m backstroke and 100-m butterfly.

Evangelista’s ripples at the pool sparked the Davao’s Durian City athletes to top the elementary swimming competitions. Dara’s sister Camyl was not as lucky, however, as she missed out on the gold when her relay team was disqualified for fielding a teammate who has swam three relays.

Panabo City’s Lian Cantil, a standout of Davao del Norte’s AGR Kids Program, came out as the secondary girls’ best swimmer in the 2-day competitions supervised by the Department of Education. (Neil Bravo)
