EASMI's commitment

Three major sports events in February will kickstart another busy season for sports organizing firm Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc.

It’s not surprising. EASMI has practically spearheaded the sports renaissance in the grassroots level not only in Davao City but also around the country. On February 11, EASMI will extend its corporate vision of empowering primary and secondary stakeholders in sports through a Sports Management Seminar dedicated to sports moderators, PE teachers and school sports administrators.

The Sports Management Seminar is a short course designed to upgrade existing capabilities of school sports stakeholders. Somewhere down the road, EASMI envisions to equip these school-based sports managers to develop a system of sports planning and event organizing in order to complement school-oriented sports programs for corporate firms like EASMI.

This year, EASMI President Darren Evangelista said the sporting community should expect a heap of sports events organized by EASMI particularly involving schools. “The schools are where our widest base of talents is found. Likewise, our desire is to keep our talents in school for them to achieve a holistic development. Looking at it this way, we found the need to enhance the capabilities of our schools in order to make them responsive to the trends in sports especially the collaboration between schools and corporate sponsors.”

For this seminar, Evangelista will bring his wealth of experience as athlete, coach, manager and organizer to the seminar as main resource speaker. He will be talking on the topic Introduction to Sports Management. Other speakers are James Infiesto of the City Sports Office and this writer.

Infiesto, who is also the regional head of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), will talk on Organizing an Event. I will speak on Sports Planning and Developing School Sports Program.

Another event the EASMI is holding next week is the Season 8 of the Shakey’s Girls V-League with some 12 high school teams vying for the championship. The winner earns a berth to the National Finals.

For most volleyball fans, the Shakey’s V-League is the PBA of volleyball. It is a widely-followed sports event featuring the best collegiate squads in the country reinforced by imports. The Girls V-League is the farm league of Shakey’s. The league is designed to discover fresh talents from the high school ranks who will soon be moving up to the collegiate ranks and therefore be qualified to play in the regular V-League tournament.

It will be the second year that EASMI will be handling the Shakey’s tournament which is a testament of its growing niche in the field of sports event management.

The third event will be the Mindanao Age Group Swimming Championship otherwise known as the Evangelista Cup. Like the sports management seminar, the swimfest is backed by Pediatrica, makers of the popular vitamin brand Growee.

The swimfest is expected to lure some 200 young swimmers from all over Mindanao.

For a dyed-in-the-wool sports purist, I say these are the many dimensions of a genuinely grassroots sports development program that is responsive to the demands of the sports community. In the next couple of weeks, EASMI will go full throttle with its youth sports camps sponsored by Growee vitamins embarking on another 52-city coverage.

The exciting Pinoy Beach Games will also be staged once more in Boracay with bigger participation this time in anticipation of the country’s hosting of the 3rd Asian Beach Games in 2012.

These are but some of the many exciting things in the offing for this sporting season. A growing company which exists by growing future sports standouts indeed deserve a growing acclaim.

“It’ a commitment,” says Darren as he foresees another banner year for EASMI in the field of sports development.
